Swimming pools are a great way to exercise, provide relief from the hot sun, and encourage socializing.  Chemicals are added to swimming pool water to enhance safety by preventing the spread of infectious pathogens, inhibit algae growth, control water pH, and stop corrosion of pool equipment.  However, when used improperly, swimming pool chemicals can also cause dangerous health concerns.

Here are some safety tips you should always practice to avoid chemical injuries and emergencies.

• Always leave all chemicals in their original, labeled manufacturer packaging.
• Keep swimming pool chemicals behind locked doors and cabinets when not in use.
• Store chemicals in a dry, ventilated area.
• Handle pool chemicals in a well-ventilated area.
• Do not mix individual pool chemicals.
• Use only dry tools (such as scoops) when handling chemicals.
• Do not mix old and new chemicals – even if they are the same type.
• Do not pre-dissolve or dilute swimming pool chemicals before use.
• Always add pool chemicals to the water, not the other way around.

• Wear safety equipment, such as goggles, gloves, and a mask.
