With a few adjustments, you can make your outdoor living spaces welcoming and comfortable. With an ideal setting, you’ll be able to spend more time in the fresh air and sunshine and host al fresco events for family, friends and neighbors. Here are 3 top ideas.
1. Be bold with color. Earth tones may look nice in the living room, but outside, they simply blend in with the surroundings. A pink table or bright yellow, red or blue Adirondack chairs may not be everyone’s cup of tea – and yes, these colors would certainly be overwhelming indoors – but in outdoor living spaces, they’ll add an element of fun and playfulness.
2. Create drama with lighting. Good deck and landscape lighting can flaunt the assets of your outdoor spaces, while putting the less attractive features into the shadows. As a rule of thumb, lighting outside a house that’s pointed downward creates a cozy, soft glow, and lighting pointed upward dramatically accents a home’s architectural structure.
3. Add warmth with a fire pit. What separates mankind from other animal species is our ability to control fire. Fire is naturally captivating, and adding it to a social environment instantly transforms an otherwise-mundane outdoor living space into one that’s warm and inviting. A fire pit is just the thing to keep you outdoors on a cool summer’s evening, and of course, is great for winter in mild climates.
